This new 36-page booklet presents the history of long term oxygen therapy (LTOT) and the state of our knowledge about the scientific basis for LTOT. Emerging technologies promise to make LTOT more available and effective for the growing number of patients with a medical necessity for LTOT. The booklet includes the recommendations from the 6th Oxygen Consensus Conference, as well as the five previous recommendations, published in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1993, and 1999. This booklet is free to AARC members, but please order only the number you need. There is a small cost to mail to those who are not AARC members.

COPD Wallet Card
Thanks to the generosity of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System, the NLHEP now has the COPD Wallet Card for patients. This card, designed for patients to keep track of their medications and spirometry results, is in a plastic sleeve and is about the size of a credit card. Pulmonary rehab programs may want to give these as a graduation gift to their patients.

services. This Web page brings practical, science-based information

Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education, (ALCASE),
is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those
living with lung cancer. The ALCASE Web site brings you information
about lung cancer advocacy, support and education.
The
American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)
is the only professional society for respiratory therapists
in hospitals and with home care companies, managers of respiratory and
cardiopulmonary services, and educators who provide respiratory care
training.
The
American College of Chest Physicians, (ACCP),
is the leading resource for the improvement in cardiopulmonary
health and critical care worldwide. It mission is to promote the prevention
and treatment of diseases of the chest through leadership, education,
research and communication.
The
American Lung Association, (ALA),
national Web site provides online information on asthma
and other lung diseases, tobacco control, and environmental health.
The
American Thoracic Society, (ATS),
founded in 1905 and serving as the medical section
of the American Lung Association, is an international professional and
scientific society which focuses on respiratory and critical care medicine.
The Society's members help prevent and fight respiratory disease through
research, education, patient care and advocacy.
The Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis
is a national nonpartisan organization led by physicians,
medical research professionals, patient advocates, and organizations
impacted by pulmonary fibrosis. It serves to unify and enrich education,
patient support, and research efforts for pulmonary fibrosis.
Colorado
Health Net,
is a Colorado nonprofit corporation formed in 1995
to provide electronic access to factual and statistical information,
support services, medical resources and related health care information
for persons with chronic medical conditions. This Web site provides
facts and statistics about chronic illnesses, outlines federal services,
describes the side effects of medications, presents question and answer
sessions with physicians and lists upcoming conferences and presentations.
COPD
ALERT
is a nonprofit, Internet-based support and advocacy
group for COPD patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and all
those who care.
Dailylung.com,
is an online medical magazine covering lung disease
and health-related topics. The editors say their goal is to produce
a concise, reliable and readable source of information for readers interested
in lung disease such as asthma and emphysema. Current issues in pulmonary
medicine and procedures such as lung transplantation are included.

Emphysema
Foundation For Our Right to Survive, (EFFORTS),
is a nonprofit activists/support organization formed,
funded and operated by patients with emphysema, who are working for
further research, more effective treatment and hopefully a cure for
emphysema and related lung diseases. EFFORTS also provides a support
mailing list and educational resources for its members, without charge.
The
Hanover Hospital Demonstration Project,
spearheaded by Dr. Michael Ader of Hanover, Pennsylvania
is an example of a community-based program promoting pulmonary wellness
through educational programs, patient publications and an easily accessible
center of excellence in pulmonary care to meet specific respiratory
care needs of Hanover and the surrounding communities. The NLHEP hopes
that many communities are inspired by the innovation and dedication
shown by this project.
Lung
Cancer Frontiers
Lung Cancer Frontiers was launched in January
1996 as a newsletter dedicated to advancing knowledge about lung cancer.
It's emphasis is on early identification and treatment. Dr. Tom Petty
is the Editor in Chief of the Lung Cancer Frontiers newsletter which
covers more information on early identification and treatment.
Since 1971, the National
Emphysema Foundation, (NEF),
has worked to improve the quality of life of those
who have emphysema, asthma and related diseases through education, research
and direct patient care. NEF works with academic institutions and public
agencies worldwide to study emphysema and to heighten awareness of the
disease internationally.
The
National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, (NHLBI),
Web site contains medical alerts, professional and
general health related information and research and training information
for biomedical investigators and students interested in the cardiovascular,
pulmonary and circulatory systems.
The
National Jewish Medical and Research Center,
founded in 1899, is a Global Leader in Lung, Allergic,
and Immune Diseases". It is the only medical and research center
in the United States devoted entirely to respiratory, allergic and immune
system diseases, including asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, severe allergies,
AIDS, cancer and autoimmune diseases such as lupus. National Jewish
is a nonprofit institution dedicated to enhancing prevention, treatment
and cures through research, and to developing and providing innovative
clinical programs for treating patients regardless of age, religion,
race or ability to pay.
Pedipress,
is the nation's leading asthma publisher. Their mission
is to improve asthma care by publishing clear, concise, accurate and
practical books and diaries for patients and professionals.
Praxis.md,
is an online resource for general practitioners and
other medical professionals developed by an expert team of publishers
and physicians. It contains authoritative recommendations integrated
with drug information and PubMed literature searching all in an easy
navigable format, Praxis.MD provides authoritative, continually updated
information and advice to physicians and medical staff o all aspects
of pulmonary medicine. All articles are written by clinicians and researchers
under the supervision of Antonio M. Gotto, Dean of the Weill Medical
College of Cornell University, and the Praxis Editorial Board. Its central
resource is Praxis Medicine, a database of full-text articles (the HyperReference)
covering diagnosis, treatment and prevention of nearly three hundred
conditions and symptom.
The
Pulmonary Education and Research Foundation, (PERF),
is a nonprofit group dedicated to helping those with
chronic respiratory disease through education, research, and information,
a monthly newsletter highlights current issues of interest for those
with chronic respiratory disease. Examples include: pulmonary rehabilitation,
breathing techniques, liquid oxygen, and human growth hormone. A bulletin
board for questions and answers is provided.
